In this project we looked at food inequality and fighting injustices within the food system. My group particularly partnered with PATH and North County Food Policy Council (NCFPC), and we compared data of waste from buisnesses against how much food school food aid programs need. We used what we learned to create a research paper, which you can find HERE. We gathered our data from the GIS platform, an interactive online map provided by NCFPC. It was very interesting to me to see exactly how much food gets wasted in my own city. When talking about large issues like food waste and food insecurity, it's easy to remove it from yourself. This project really opened my eyes on what's going on around me. Some helpful critique I received from Craig was to compare two pieces of data, as we originally were only looking at one data set. Some helpful critique i received from a peer was to make the data ,ore readable and clear to those who don't know as much about data science. I'm proud of the way my debrief went, as i ended up sounding much more eloquent than i thought i would. My best collaboration was with Jazmine when collecting data from the GIS platform. I gained perspective on how much is wasted when it could be going to children in need. I learned a lot about the wonders of data sheets and patience. If i were to do this project again, i would look more carefully when picking groups. I wanted to do more voulenteering, but our group was more data based, so that was a bit dissapointing. the most surprising thing was that my group finished on time and it turned out okay.
