Comida Con Causa was the name of my first semester project. In it, we learned about Latin American culture and politics. My group had a focus on Venezuela, but other groups did other countries. At the beginning of the project, Matt gave us two essential questions: Why do poor people historically inhabit rich lands? and How do we combat inequities in the food system? Our project was based around both questions, but I feel that the first was the main focus. During the project we had to research and eventually make a product based on a country. Below is my group’s product.
As I said before, my group’s country was Venezuela, and while researching about it we found out a lot about Venezuela's economy and political views. For example, an article that really helped me with my research paper and to gain perspective on Venezuela’s government was https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/cifamerica/2009/feb/02/hugo-chavez-venezuela-anniversary-violence . This article is mostly about the tremendous raise in crime since Hugo Chavez had been elected. I found it by going to theguardian.com and doing a search for articles containing The words Venezuela, Chavez, and Crisis. I also restricted the search to more that 3 years old. Something interesting I learned is about how improvements to the justice system were blocked to hide corruption in the government.
